What's Happening at Trinity Church, March 18-24, 2007

Note:  At the bottom of this email is a listing of the week's activities in a format you can put on your refrigerator door.  Also note that our church web site has been completely updated (http://www.trinityhattiesburg.org), and copies of The Tidings and The Weekly Grail can be found there.

Use of Green Vestments Sunday, March 18.  Fr. Bill will be wearing special green vestments at the Eucharist today in honor of St. Patrick's Day, March 17.  These vestments were made in memory of Bruce Van Nostrand by the Sisters of St. Claire in Jamaica Plain, MA, and have not been worn at Trinity before now.  Bruce passed away March 20, 2004.

Stations of the Cross to be Offered 3 pm on Good Friday.  The Stations of the Cross (or The Way of the Cross) refers to the depiction of the final hours (or Passion) of Jesus, and the devotion commemorating the Passion.  The tradition exists in many faith groups including the Anglican, and Episcopalian churches.  It is most commonly done during the Season of Lent, especially on Good Friday and on Friday evenings during Lent.  At Trinity, we will observe the Stations at 3 pm on Good Friday, April 6 using the form prescribed in the Episcopal Book of Occasional Services (BOS).  The object of the Stations is to help the faithful to make a spiritual pilgrimage of prayer to the chief scenes of Christ's sufferings and death.  The stations themselves will be shown using a series of 14 pictures or sculptures and will be accompanied by the reading of the text from the BOS.  The stations are:  Jesus is condemned to death, Jesus receives the cross, Jesus falls the first time, Jesus meets his mother, Simon carries the cross, Veronica wipes Jesus’ face, Jesus falls the second time, Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem, Jesus falls the Third time, Jesus is stripped of his garments, Jesus is crucified, Jesus dies on the cross, Jesus' body removed from the cross, Jesus is laid in the tomb.

Our own LA Rogers in the news:  LA was a B-17 pilot during WW II.  He recently flew in a B-17 from Mobile, AL to Hattiesburg along with his great grandson.  A "grand" time was had by all.

Holy Water. During the Lenten season, a vessel of holy water is often placed in a church particularly if that church does not usually use holy water during the other seasons of the year. The vessel is frequently placed near the entry door so that as people enter the nave (church) they may dip their fingers in it before crossing themselves. Such gestures are not for everyone, but some people find such actions meaningful during the Lenten season. You can read more about Lenten traditions on our church website
